The Malawi Socio-Economic Database (MASEDA) was officially launched on 18th October, 2002.MASEDA is the first comprehensive and up to date socio-economic database on the situation of human development in Malawi for use by government institutions, the donor community and civil society counterparts. This standardised software application allows users to:

  • organise and document statistical data on the situation of human development in Malawi
  • present information through a variety of presentation tools including tables, graphs and maps

MASEDA Version 1.0 contains data for a total of 147 indicators. The data is organised by sectors and provides updated time-series as well as estimates from various data sources

The database mainly contains national level indicators, but some indicators have data by district and traditional authority(TA). Where information is available ,the data is dissegregated by sex and urban/rural strata. However MASEDA aims to capture desegregated data, not only by geographical location, but also by other characteristics i.e gender, age and educational status, inorder to enhance the utility of MASEDA and support policy discussions, planning and monitoring exercise.

The National Statistical Office(NSO) is responsible for maintaining MASEDA.As such, NSO will ensure that the database is updated regularly and and new versions are released and disseminated accordingly.MASEDA version 1.0 is available on CDs which can be obtained from NSO headquarters or Lilongwe Regional Office.
